Installing Perl

    Installing Perl

If you use a mac, Perl should already be installed.  This is also true of many Linux systems.  If you use a PC, there are two basic options: ActiveState Perl and Strawberry Perl

    ActiveState Perl

ActiveState is a company that produces programming tools and makes Perl available for free to the community (Python too if you are interested).  I have used ActiveState Perl for many years and have found it to be an excellent platform and very stable.  One of the features is a very easy system for downloading and installing user contributed packages.  I have install ActiveState perl without problems on desktops and laptops, 32-bit and 64-bit systems, Windows NT, Vista, and Windows7.  It is very simple, even for the novice - see my instructions (PDF).

    Strawberry Perl

This is a relatively new open source version of Perl.  I haven't used it that much but I did install it and it seems to be OK.  The package installation and management system is not as good as ActiveState's.  Installation is easy, see my instructions (PDF)
